Handling amounts of unpredictable length is the specific challenge here. Because you cannot rely on a fixed digit count, your eye has to chunk the number before your fingers commit. Reading a total in groups of three from the decimal point outward is the standard technique, and it works as well on screen as it does on paper.
Watch your error stat rather than your score while you learn the pattern. Two or three wrong entries in a short session usually means you are chunking inconsistently, not keying too fast.
